interspecies / interstellar signal design

Glowing birdcage under a starry night sky.

At the 2026 Leonardo@Djerassi Art+Science+Technology Residency, I explored whether a universal communication code might emerge from patterns shared across biological, technological, and potentially extraterrestrial intelligences. Drawing on humpback whale bioacoustics, music, information theory, and SETI/METI research, the project investigated how structured signals are generated, recognized, and interpreted across radically different forms of intelligence. Inspired by Dr. Roger Payne's observations of parallels between whale song and human music, the research traced rhythmic organization to deep evolutionary roots, examining vertebrate neural architectures, entrainment, and Euclidean rhythms as possible foundations for a universal syntax. In collaboration with media artist Harpreet Sareen, an interactive light-and-sound communication system was developed to translate mathematical and musical structures into dynamic signals, creating a testbed for first-contact scenarios and interspecies communication. Through rhythmic pattern generation, call-and-response interaction, live performance, and signal experimentation, the project explored how sentience might be recognized through temporal structure.

Universal communication code

A Universal Communication Code is a shared framework built on patterns that any intelligent observer could potentially recognize, whether they evolved in Earth's oceans, forests, deserts, distant exoplanets, or entirely different physical environments.

Designed around six universal concepts:

  •  Conscious awareness and perception.
  • Communication across distance.
  • Progression through time.
  • Multiple species, civilizations, and perspectives.
  • Logic, balance, and verifiability.
  • Information carried through any medium: sound, light,      radio, vibration, chemistry, or unknown future channels.

interspecies / interstellar hybrid MUSIC

Music composed by creating a computational mapping between humpback whale song and human musical expression. Conditional probabilities, latent space, forbidden transitions and Euclidean rhythms.

future human hypothesis

The Future Human Hypothesis suggests that future UFOs may be piloted by time‑traveling humans rather than extraterrestrials. Proposed by biological anthropologist Dr. Michael P. Masters in Identified Flying Objects, it frames UFO encounters as possible visits from future scientists or historians studying their own past. While unproven, the absence of extraterrestrial contact lends weight to the idea that our first contact might be an encounter with an evolved version of ourselves. Extending this idea raises speculative questions about evolution and intelligence: how might highly social, intelligent species like whales evolve? Might future humans hybridized our biology  with them to rapidly adapt environmental change?

And if so, what stories would these future beings tell us?

The Great Migration

Orcas are highly intelligent, vocal and socially complex marine mammals. Perhaps they are another species to leave. Earth Their ability to communicate across vast distances, hunt using acoustic mapping and transmit cultural knowledge position them as ideal candidates for adaptation.

T'kai

What would be the progression from earth-bound ocean dweller to inhabitant of a planet in the Goldilox zone? How would they remember earth?

Intelligence Filter

How might a non-earthly intelligence understand the concepts we apply in our bid to search for ETI? Would they have the same theories, frameworks and principles?
